Design of a Mid-Columbia Coordinated Hydro Operations Model
This paper describes the formulation of a seven project, 120 hour operations optimization model of the
mid-Columbia hydroelectric power system. The model performs a reanalysis of the complete hydropower system
to determine coordinated Federal-Municipal operations that could meet historical load and maximize total
potential energy in storage at the end of the time horizon. A mixture of linear and quadratic constraints
represent reservoir stage-storage curves, tailwater stage-discharge curves, transient river routing, and
seasonally dependant environmental constraints on operations. This paper describes the optimization modeling
approaches used to represent the actual physical system and to accommodate uncertainties in the historical
datasets used for calibration.

The Economic Value of Water
The purpose of this paper is to examine the economic value of water
based on a society's willingness to pay for it. In developing countries
this may be a perverse concept that...more.

Summer 2008 Hydrovision Workshop on Operations and Planning: Shorten the Optimization Development Cycle
Proprietary software for hydro optimization lacks flexibility and is expensive and time consuming to develop. There is another way to develop
a decision support system. In this workshop you will use an optimization engine and a spreadsheet interface for globally optimizing generation
scheduling and unit committment. Benefits include improved technical communications, flexibility to make revisions, direct control of data and
reduced development costs. Working examples based on actual experience will include one station, a cascade of stations, and a larger system.
Validation procedures will point out data problems and their management. This is a new world for hydroelectric decision support systems - to
participate actively bring a laptop with Excel 2003 to the workshop.
Thanks to all that came and made this an interesting day!

Hydroelectric Unit Dispatching Optimization Software
An Excel 2003 spreadsheet that calculates unit settings to maximize energy production efficiency to meet either a specified electrical load
or to achieve a specified discharge for small and medium sized hydro plants. The spreadsheet uses dynamic programming techniques. Developed
with the assistance of Natural Resources Canada. Download the software description or
the Excel 2003 spreadsheet (which includes the software description).
